Tacking Through Life by Carolyn Wasik

December 3, 2020

I enjoyed this memoir very much. The author writes in a cheerful, honest and down to earth way about the highs and lows of life on the ocean waves.

She and her indomitable Danish husband Gert have some great adventures, both on land and sea, although it is clear quite early on that Carolyn prefers the land travelling. All the same, she’s spunky enough to do the sailing for several years and for quite long stretches, which is more than I would be. I’ve read several sailing memoirs and each one confirms that I would have neither the stomach nor the patience for it. This one is no exception.

As a canal boat owner, the book confirms for me that inland cruising is infinitely preferable. A great travelogue, though, and fun to read and recommended for those readers who are indomitable sailors as well.
