Boating with Buster is a really lovely book on many levels. Not only is it the touching story of a delightful Beagle, whose arrival in the lives of his humans, Alison and Roger Alderton, brings them joy after years of sorrow and grief, it is also the story of some wonderful boating adventures.

As a barge owner myself, I was captivated by the stories of the couple’s travels across England, Ireland and then into Europe. The books ends in Denmark, but this is not the final stop in their adventures by any means. Alison and Roger are intrepid with a capital I and undertake journeys I could only dream of.

Alison’s descriptions of the scenery they pass through and the places where they spend time are just lovely and she describes them in lyrical and detailed prose. To some extent determined by the locations of Roger’s job, they keep travelling from place to place, and their adventures take them to some of the most beautiful waterways in Europe, but also onto some reaches I would never dare to go.

Throughout the book, their furry friend Buster is the other character in the story, so much beloved and so much part of their pack, it is hard to imagine he isn’t human at times. The book is beautifully illustrated with canal art motifs and peppered with gorgeous photos of what I can only call National Geographic standard.

Boating with Buster is a work of love in every sense and a tribute to their beloved canine ‘Admiral.’ It is at the same time warm hearted, moving and incredibly interesting in its wealth of boating information. A lovely, rich read.
